Some finish line drama means Zoe finishes a disapointing 11th in Gangwon, Korea

Zoe Gillings, Britain’s top rated snowboarder, improved two places on her qualification run to finish 11th in today’s (Sunday’s) FIS World Snowboard Cross Championships in Gangwon, Korea.

Though she is disappointed by her finishing position, it nevertheless represents an improvement of nine places on the Isle of Man athlete’s showing in the last world championships two years ago.

Heavy snow had made the choice of lanes something of a lottery this morning, and in her heat, Gillings was up against Olivia Nobbs of Switzerland and Canada’s Maelle Ricker who would go on to finish second and fourth overall behind eventual champion Helen Olafsen of Norway

Gillings, 23, managed to pass both Nobbs and Ricker and take the lead in the heat, but just before the finish line there was contact as Ricker fought back and Gillings crashed, effectively ending her competition. She now travels to the USA for the prestigious invitation-only Winter X-Games which are being held in Aspen, Colorado.

Gillings told her website www.zoegillings.com: “This is a disappointing result for me but I’m now focusing on the X-Games. I’m looking forward to getting back on snow.”

British attention at the World Championships now turns to the men’s and women’s Half Pipe discipline, with the finals on Friday, January 23. Sam Cullum, Dom Harington, and Ben Kilner are our male competitors while Kate Foster and Double Olympian Lesley McKenna go in the women’s division.
